Fats: The Good, the Bad & the Ugly

Fats: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

Do you remember the low-fat craze in the eighties?  Everything was advertised as “fat-free” because if you ate fat then you would get fat, right?  Wrong! Wrong, how wrong we were. The truth is, we don’t store the fat we eat.  We either burn it or excrete it.  Carbs are the sneaky culprits that add unwanted inches to our waistline.  If we eat too many carbs, (and you know we do) then our bodies convert those carbs into body fat that we tuck away for future use.  We actually have 30 to 60 days of fat energy stored on our bodies.  We are just carrying that around with us everywhere!  It’s like our own, personal, food-storage room.  Talk about food hoarding!

The “fat makes us fat” falsehood has been perpetuated from clear back to the fifties Olive oil on tablewhen Ansel Keys started the lie and I am still running into people today who just can’t believe that eating fat is actually good for you.  Our brains need fat, our hearts need fat, our skin needs fat, in fact, every cell of our body needs fat to repair and grow.  But not just any fat, simply put:  We need God-made natural fats!  Novel idea, huh?  That the creator of our bodies knew we needed fat, so he provided it; Coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil, nut oils, dairy fat, eggs, fish oil, and yes, even the saturated fat from animals!  If it is a God-made natural fat, then eat it (of course excluding personal allergies).  This is 2018 and I just read a WebMD article that is filled with the same big “FAT” lies that Ansel Keys told.  Seriously, it’s been over 60 years, let’s move on.

The fats that are bad for you are man-made fats: canola oil, corn oil, cottonseed oil, safflower oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil and hydrogenated oils like Crisco. The four “c’s” and the three “s’s”.   But maybe you are thinking, “Didn’t God make corn and cotton, etc?” Yes, but the question is, did He make a canola? Just kidding, canola is a made-up word combining Canada and ola (oil).  Fun little fact to look up later.  No really, these so-called “vegetable” oils may start out as God-made plants, but the harsh chemicals and high-heat refining process that they go through to extract these oils is far from Godly, not to mention the partial to full hydrogenation.  Essentially the oils are rendered unusable by the body and actually damage our cells every time we eat them through oxidation that causes inflammation.  In fact, 30% of our total calories come from these bad oils and are found in nearly everything packaged, processed or fried and even in “healthy” prepared salad dressings.  It can be argued that consuming these oils is worse for you than smoking because they go to and damage every cell in our bodies every time we consume them.

So now you can sound very smart to your family and friends when you share with them all you learned about fat, but the more important question is: what are you going to do about it?  Keto, of course!
